films
just wanted to blog about the oscar nominated movies ive watched so everyone doesnt get overly influenced by critics and go rushing to catch all. such thoughtful ppl as them may be able to find much meaning in their movies but i just want a good story. so what if it delivers a profound political message or the acting's great or whatever. realise im gonna sound simplistic and shallow but too bad.

little miss sunshine:
(nominated for best picture)
i liked this! quirky, lovely, but the laughs make u feel uncomfortable at the same time. what wins me over is that this film is so totally unpretentious, wears its immense heart on its sleeve. its deceptively lightweight when other films try to seem heavier than they really are. didnt set out to win awards, and thats why im really rooting for it.
the queen:
(nominated for best picture)
ok i know i said the synopsis sounds like boring political fare but this is surprisingly funny and compelling. it saddens me to realise there is this huge human capacity for collective irrational hysteria.
babel:
(nominated for best picture)
ppl doing silly stuff and getting into big messy situations. the sort of super bleak film you sit through painfully to emerge depressed and im sure you're supposed to learn smth here. i admired but didnt enjoy it. and the jap girl story is out of place with a crappy link to the rest.
pan's labyrinth:
(nominated for best foreign language film)
ongsf of the straits times says its a "dizzying hall of mirrors which reflect and refract the deepest recesses of the human psyche." RUBBISH. but it is a damn good fairytale/alltooreallife stuff. im a fantasy convert paradoxically by a film which is only part fantasy.
